One thing that must not be missed while in Udaipur is, having dinner by the lake. While there are a handful of restaurants now for the same, Ambrai remains one of the best for the panoramic view of the City Palace.
The approach road or lane leading Amet Haveli, where the restaurant is located, is very narrow. Don’t venture to drive your car to the restaurant unless you are very well acquainted with the area.
You will be welcomed by the beautifully lit facade of the Amet Haveli. We booked a table previously and were lucky to get a table at the corner, by the lakeside, where we got an unobstructed view of the lake, the City Palace and the Taj Lake Palace.
The minimalistic lighting is necessary to enhance candlelit ambiance but that also means hard time and use of a mobile torch to read the menu.
We got started with LIIT and Highland Cooler (orange and whiskey mix) which were acceptably potent. In food, we stuck to basics. French Fries, Kadai Paneer and rotis. The food, as expected from reviews, turned out to be just average. I can easily compare it with a small roadside family restaurant in Mumbai that is good in taste but lacks any noteworthiness.
Service too is lackluster and the staff seemed little disinterested. We took our time in ordering and they took their due time in serving. This all didn’t bother us much as we were prepared for this were busy enjoying and photographing the stunning views.
Damages: Approx. Rs. 2300/- for 2.
Prefer this as long as you are ok shelling out the amount primarily for great views and a candle-lit dinner by the lake are ok with just average food and service.
